Black dogs, as drawn by an unknown artist, are a famous example of zooform phenomena.

Zooform phenomena is a term coined to describe entities which resemble animals, but are allegedly paranormal or supernatural in nature. Notable Zooforms include black dogs, werewolves, and the mothman.[1] Some examples of Zooforms may not be inherently paranormal or supernatural in nature, but have popular paranormal explanations for them.
