The nyokodoing was a cryptid cat reported from the wetlands of South Sudan. According to hunter Roger Courtney (1902 – 1949), who received a description from a guide of Nuer origin, the nyokodoing was a ferocious and agile hippo-sized animal covered in red hair. One was reported to have killed two Anuak warriors during the crossing of a marsh before Courtney's time, but the colonial authorities believed that the warriors' companions had invented the story, and murdered the men themselves.[1] Bernard Heuvelmans classified the nyokodoing as a possible water lion, which he theorised were sabre-toothed cats (subfamily Machairodontinae) adapted to an aquatic lifestyle.[2]
