The kumanga is a cryptid carnivorous plant reported from Madagascar, one of several "killer trees" reported from the island. Very rare and found only in one location, the kumanga is said to be a tree which is poisonous when in bloom.[1]
Ivan Mackerle successfully sought out the kumanga, taking gas masks for protection, but it was not in bloom when he came across it. However, the tree seen by him and his team did have the skeleton of a bird and a dead tortoise at its roots. Karl Shuker speculates that its reputed poisonous nature may simply be a local superstition, as a number of harmless Malagasy plants are popularly said to be dangerous.[1]
