Illustration of the Jersey devil from a January 1909 issue of the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin.
The Jersey devil or Leeds devil is a cryptid reported from the United States, principally New Jersey's Pine Barrens, but also several other states.[1] Generally described as a bipedal, bat-winged creature with the head of a horse and short arms, it is regarded as "anatomical nonsense" zoologically.[2] A large number of hoaxes have been confirmed or alleged, beginning early on, and attempts at zoological identifications range from cranes, herons, kangaroos, and hammerheaded bats (Hypsignathus monstrosus) to living pterosaurs and the supernatural. It has sometimes been classified as a flying humanoid.[1]
