Ingo Krumbiegel (25 February 1903 — 11 October 1990) was a German mammalogist, doctor, and animal rights activist who investigated various cryptids, most prominently the Andean wolf, water lions, and waitoreke. His book Von Neuen und Unentdeckten Tierarten (1950) has been described as the first work to give an overview of what is now called cryptozoology.[1] For this, Krumbiegel was made an honourary life member of the International Society of Cryptozoology.[2] In later life, he occasionally contributed to the society's journal, Cryptozoology.

Cryptozoological work[]

Krumbiegel's first foray into cryptozoology was a study of the coje ya menia, published in 1947, in which he concluded that this Angolan water lion was likely an amphibious sabre-toothed cat. A former officer of the Kaiserliche Schutztruppe named Naumann subsequently sent Krumbiegel a description of a similar animal, the dilali, supposed to exist near Chad's Ouham River.[3] In 1950, he also published an article covering the waitoreke of New Zealand.[1] His best-remembered contribution to cryptozoology was his formal description, in 1949, of the Andean wolf (Dasycyon hagenbecki).[4]

Krumbiegel's book Von Neuen und Unentdeckten Tierarten (1950) was regarded by Heuvelmans as the first attempt at providing an overview of yet-to-be-described animals. As well as discussing recently-discovered species, this work covers about a dozen cryptids, including the king cheetah, black tapir, Ameranthropoides loysi, water lions, sea serpents, waitoreke, spotted bushbuck, Wood's argus, and Queensland tiger.
