De Loys ape

The first and only extant photograph.

Other names: Ameranthropoides loysi, Ateles loysi
Country reported: Venezeuala

De Loys' ape is the name given to a spider monkey-like primate shot and photographed in Venezeuala by Swiss geologist François de Loys in 1920.[1] Although the photograph caused some excitement when the story was first published, it is now generally regarded as a hoax showing a spider monkey, but has also been connected with stories of the Mono Grande,[1] the didi,[1] and the mapinguari.[2] The second photograph, allegedly showing the animal alongside people for scale, has never been found.[3]
